Mistletoe Mouth

If there is ever a time to don a red lip, it’s now. Let’s get serious though, it’s not the easiest look to pull off. It’s a statement, to say in the least and sometimes it can be a shock to see yourself with a loud mouth. I’m going to hold your hand through the process so that you don’t do it the wrong way.

#1. Choose the right shade of red.

I always always opt for a blue red. I think it looks best on everyone. It’s classic. I far prefer MAC to all other lipsticks. The pigment is so strong that it actually stays on and it goes on the color it looks in the tube. I’ve tried them all and this isn’t just for red either, their lipsticks are the best.

#2. Exfoliate your mouth.

You need to make for certain that your mouth has every bit of dry skin off by exfoliating first. French Girl lip exfoliator – sold at Anthropologie or online – love it.

#3. Cover your lips in powder.

This helps your lipstick to adhere to your lips really well. You want your mouth to be dry so the color doesn’t move. Red lipstick is very bad at bleeding and that is not a good look.

#4. Start with lip pencil.

Fill in your mouth with lip pencil and accentuate the lip line first- pretend that you’re coloring like a child and do a darker line around the edges and then shade in the rest but kind of evenly and do the entire lip.

#5. Apply the lipstick.

You can use a lip brush if you want just a smidge of the color, or you can use the actual lipstick itself and apply heavy handed. I like to make sure that I have enough of it on the mouth so it doesn’t wear off. You’ll want to make sure you keep a small tube of the lipstick in your handbag to reapply as needed after you drink and talk/ eat dinner etc. MAC just came out with a teeny tiny little tube and it’s perfect.

#6. Line border of mouth with concealer or powder.

Once the color has been applied, take an edged brush like an angled brush or concealer brush and dip it in powder and just trace the outside edges with powder or a bit of concealer so that it encases the color and makes the lips look very pronounced and perfected.

#7. Don’t kiss, drink, eat or talk to anyone so the lipstick stays on perfectly.

Just kidding. These tricks above will help the color last the evening so you don’t have to worry:) I would however, abstain from kissing Santa under the mistletoe as it will get on your lover’s lips!
