Did you know your skin is your largest organ? So anything you put on your skin will be absorbed into your body. You may make sure to eat a clean diet and maintain a regular workout schedule, but do you consider what your putting on your face and body?
We use these products every day so why not take an interest on the effects they have on their health. It is scary to think that the United States has not passed a major federal law to regulate the safety of ingredients used in personal care products since 1938. Europe on the other hand has spent the last decade banning nearly 1,400 chemicals that have been found to have harmful effects. With an industry so unregulated, it is important that we take the safety and care into our own hands.
There are more than 80,000 different chemicals on the market today, so clearly it can be tricky for someone to navigate and decide what should be considered "non-toxic.” We love two resources that are great for navigating through the industry.
1) The Skin Deep database from the Environmental Working group allows you to research products and they will rate their toxicity. Aim for choosing products in the 0-2 range.
2) We love BeautyCounter’s “Never List” which has a list of harmful ingredients that you should never have in your products. (They also have a pocket-sized “Never List” that you can carry around with you while at the store.)
The notion of using natural skincare is becoming more and more popular and thus the products are becoming even better, so you won't have to compromise on performance when going non-toxic!
It’s not easy making the switch but that’s why we suggest starting small with one product at a time. I’m still working on having a completely clean cabinet, but have slowly switched out beauty and skincare products over time.
See below for some of our favorite non-toxic products and brands to help you make the transition…
Try starting with the product you use on the largest surface area of your body- think body lotion… While almond, coconut, and apricot are all great body oils, I found one product that I now can’t live without. This One Love Organics Gardenia + Tea body serum makes everyday feel like a spa day. I spray some on in the shower after I’m done and just pat myself dry.
I always take off my makeup before I wash my face. I think it’s a crucial step to having clean and clear skin. My two favorite natural beauty products for removing makeup are the RMS coconut wipes and One Love Organics Vitamin B Cleanser.
Coconut oil can do just about anything and that’s why I’m loving the Conscious Coconut coconut oil. It’s ultra-moisturizing and is great at healing dry skin and hair. I like to lather this on my ends before heading to the beach or gym.
Currently loving this active-infused and alcohol-free balancing face mist by Beautycounter. It can help prep your skin, set your makeup, and give you an automatic refresh throughout the day! The charcoal powder and kaolin clay ingredients help absorb excess oil, refine skin texture and calm redness.
I used to be afraid of putting oil on my face until I started using True Botanicals Clear Pure Radiance Oil. I always thought it would make my breakouts worse and leave my face feeling more oily. True Botanicals nailed it with this light face oil that is crafted to clear acne by regulating sebum production. It’s formulated with potent antibacterial ingredients to heal infection, clear congestion and revive vibrancy. Not only did I find my breakouts were minimizing a ton, my skin began to glowing as well.
BeautyCounter’s Tint Skin Hydrating Foundation is my go-to daily coverage. It’s earned this award because it’s lightweight, goes on seamlessly, evens skin tone, and on top of that cares for my skin. It’s made with sodium hyaluronate, a natural moisture magnet, which promotes smoother-looking skin and reduces the appearance of any fine lines or wrinkles.
Switching over to natural skincare products may seem like a big adjustment, but there’s no need to make it complicated! Look at the ingredients list and look for simple, minimal ingredients. Natural beauty not only makes us look great but it also makes us feel great. We hope you enjoy some of our favorites and embrace the world of natural beauty!
